Day 1 - Marrakech / Taroudant Via Tizi N'tast

A long journey from Marrakech offers a first-hand experience of Berber village life on the way to a Berber family’s home in the High Atlas Mountains. So on the first day he leaves the busy city of Marrakech and via the TizintTast mountain he makes his way to Taroudant. Beyond the town of Tahanaoute (KM 32), the journey practically begins.

The road leading through the N’fis valley, lined with old kasbahs, to the green landscapes of the regions of Asni and Ouirgân, reaches the Tizi N’Test pass (2092 metres). This traditional crossing was held by Berber tribes until the beginning of the century for the Kasbahs they built. An opportunity to discover the diverse and spectacular panoramas of the High Atlas, with its land villages and terraced crops. After passing Ouirgane the road becomes more winding and spectacular. Ouirgane’s dam gives way to OuedN’Fis, which has dug an impressive canyon for thousands of years.

At the towering ramparts in the middle of the Sous valley he reaches Taroudant and discovers its nine gates. A setting of subtle charm, it seems that little has changed since the time of the Medina Conquerors. And what is exceptional is that above this peaceful city floats first Almohad, then Marinid and Saadien, the memories of the prosperous past of Portugal and France. Spending the night there allows you to quickly change your pace, see space-time, and give a promising omen to your journey.

Located at the foot of the Anti-His Atlas at an altitude of 1200 meters, Tafraout (“Valley”) gets its name from the dizzying panorama that opens into the valley-shaped bowl. The architectural curiosity of the area is concentrated in the Agadir or Collective Breadbasket. When you arrive, you’ll find that Tafraute is worth the effort.
